Hi, I’m Jude. My journey into criminal justice began on the front lines, spanning more than two decades navigating the high stakes of 911 emergency communications and working face-to-face as an adult and juvenile corrections officer. When I transitioned into higher education—earning my master’s and Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University—my ultimate goal became student mentoring and career-oriented advocacy. Since 2013, I have had the privilege of training the next generation of public safety professionals across diverse institutional settings.

Whether students are taking my introductory courses, deep-diving into the study of correctional settings, or exploring ethics through my real-world case studies, they find that my teaching is theory-informed and blends my qualitative research with deep operational experience to offer hands-on, community-engaged mentoring that prepares them for immediate, meaningful workforce entry or even pursuit of further education in criminal justice, criminology, or similar fields. If you are a current or prospective student or community member and you would like to talk about your interests in criminal justice, feel free to sign up for time to speak to me on the Connect page. Let’s grab a virtual cup of coffee!

My scholarly research explores how direct public engagement with criminal justice institutions shapes civic trust, as well as perceptions of procedural justice, and administrative transparency. I examine citizens’ academies across law enforcement, correctional, and medico-legal settings, investigating how structured civic encounters foster community trust and institutional accountability. My broader research and advocacy have also focused on correctional education, post-release educational outcomes, and expanding college access for non-traditional and adult learners.

Teaching is mentoring. As a first-generation college student who is now a criminal justice instructor, I am here in large part because of those who saw their role in teaching the same way that I see mine. Having taught over 32 unique undergraduate and graduate courses across community college campuses, regional universities, online platforms, and state correctional facilities, I use process education and applied learning to foster critical thinking and professional communication for all students.

My goal in teaching is to ensure that every student, regardless of background, gains the confidence, analytical tools, and practical skills necessary for immediate workforce entry, community contribution or the pursuit of further education. Or all three! Follow the link below to read my extended teaching philosophy to learn more about the way I view teaching, my preparation for teaching, and the teaching I’ve done to date. Thanks!

In my spare time, I enjoy exploring how the Bible relates to everyday life, spoiling Radcliffe the Boston Terrier, rooting for several professional football teams, being a foodie, exploring national parks on scenic road trips, and spending quality time with my family in eastern North Carolina.
